The Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI) is the only Comprehensive Cancer Center in The Netherlands (Amsterdam). It is a well-organised and dynamic cancer research institute accommodating over 50 research groups and advanced core facilities. It is an internationally renowned center covering fundamental, translational and clinical cancer research. The work takes place within the Department of Radiology at the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam in association with the University of Maastricht.

The department of Radiology, chaired by Professor R. Beets-Tan, pursues research in oncological imaging covering a broad spectrum of cancer types. The most established line of research within the group is MR imaging of rectal carcinoma - resulting so far in over ten doctoral theses, 97 high-impact publications and numerous contributions to international congresses. The research output has served as the basis for several international guidelines in the area of colorectal carcinoma. The preclinical research facilities in our institute include an animal PET scanner and a 7 Tesla MRI, the clinical facilities include digital 3 Tesla MR units. Close collaboration in MR imaging research incl. MR Linac) exists with the research groups of the Department of Radiotherapy. ex problems within an interdisciplinary environment.

Imaging research extends to various cancer types and our aim is to improve current imaging procedures, as well as to develop image-based methods to assist clinicians in stratifying cancer patients for personalised treatment. We recognise the multidisciplinary vitality of our research environment, where experts from different fields from bioinformaticians to clinical radiologists freely collaborate to ultimately improve the quality of the medical research. A primary objective will be assisting in the translation of research findings in the department to practical uses in the clinic. This will involve leveraging artificial intelligence in imaging together with other patient data to forecast therapy response at the earliest opportunity.

Jouw profiel

We are looking for a proactive enthusiastic PhD student to work on a project funded by the European Research Council, who has spent less than 12 months of the previous 3 years living or working the Netherlands. You will be part of a team of AI specialists, working in a multidisciplinary group consisting of PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and clinical radiologists. We offer the use of excellent research facilities, there are several study and training opportunities, as well as visiting international conferences to present your work.
  • We are seeking a proactive, enthusiastic candidate with a strong background in a quantitative subject
  • Holding an MSc degree in computer science, bioinformatics, physics, computer vision, artificial intelligence, or a related subject
  • Excellent writing, communication, collaboration, and organisational skills
  • Fluent in spoken and written English
  • Affinity for programming (Python, R, Bash). Knowledge of TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch and/or experience with imaging data is highly desirable
  • The applicant must have spent less than 12 months in the previous three years living or working in the Netherlands (this is the standard mobility condition of Marie Curie European funding).

You will work in a dynamic international scientific environment and collaborate with colleagues at the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital, the NKI and at other institutes.

The appointment will initially be for 4 years and the gross salary per month will range from € 2.798,- € 3.375 according to the standard PhD scales and depends on previous experience. The terms of employment will be in accordance with the CAO Ziekenhuizen (Collective Labor Agreement for Hospitals).
